This self-paced online course introduces foundational concepts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP).

Designed for student teachers, the course provides essential knowledge and practical strategies for delivering effective English language instruction in diverse educational contexts.

Participants will explore key principles of TESOL, examine instructional approaches tailored to learner needs, and learn how to align ESP course components with the specific goals of learners and stakeholders, connecting theory to practice.

Differentiate between ESL, EFL, and ESP contexts and explain their implications for instructional design.

Apply foundational TESOL principles to create effective language learning environments.

Analyze and implement key instructional approaches such as Communicative Language Teaching (CLT).

Identify varying English proficiency levels among learners and explore strategies for supporting instruction in multi-level classrooms.

This course contains two modules of multiple units, with "check-in" quizzes at the end of each unit. Completion of this course should take approximately 3-5 hours.

We provide 7 levels of English for international students and Indiana residents. Our graduates excel in their careers or continue their education, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees at universities including IU Indianapolis, University of Indianapolis, Butler University, Ivy Tech Community College, Trine University and others around the world.
The mission of the PIE is to provide non-native English speakers with high-quality, principled, research-based instruction and supportive advising that will help them develop the communication and academic skills as well as the cultural understanding necessary to be successful in academic, professional, and social settings.
